We live in a small little area between what I call “Old Potrero” and Flamingo nicknamed Surfside. If you take a bus or are talking to someone from outside the area they will know of the Flamingo marina so we give directions to Flamingo. Surfside got it’s name from the Canadians who couldn’t pronounce Potrero and the developer back in the 70s let his daughter name it… and she picked the same name of his other development in Washington State “Surfside Estates”.

Things to know: Costa rica

  • “Pura Vida” Yes, a lot of people think of it as a slogan in Costa Rica relating to the relaxed nature of the place and just enjoying life. It is also used as a greeting. It can also be used ironically… like when shit goes down and you’re annoyed it’s still: pure life.

  • However, type A people: It’s going to take a while to get your check. They won’t bring it to you unless you ask. Generally, folks don’t want to “bother” you so they may not check-in with you or offer you things. Please let someone know if you need something. It’s potentially not on their radar. Moreover, I don’t necessarily mean at our place, but in general.

  • Tipping: Tipping has started in touristy areas but was not expected in the past. Please check your bill to make sure it doesn’t have “service” on it already. There is a typical 13% charge and that’s for taxes.

  • Cash VS card: I always use my card at restaurants and shops. There are a few places that are cash only but their prices are usually fairly cheap. A lot of places will accept USD but PLEASE ask what their “exchange rate” is for USD. I’ve seen some folks just keep it at 600 to 1 when it should have been 650 to 1. Also, not everyone is good at math, especially on a currency exchange. There’s apps you can get for that but be patient with your servers if they get it wrong especially in town.

Why we picked the area:

I had spent many years traveling to different areas on the Pacific Coast and actually had almost purchased property in Tamarindo in 2008… could you imagine?

I loved the pacific coast and wanted something less touristy than Tamarindo. I had watched some Youtube videos of Potrero and saw it had fantastic restaurants and was super walkable. With the new marina going in, it was great idea because the mega yachts are no longer allowed to dock in Jaco. It was also not as far from the airport and Jaco and felt less seedy and more like the 90s never stopped.

The charming cows wandering through town in the afternoon, the howler monkeys in the mornings, the iguanas sunning at sunset. The generous local people who wanted to contribute to their communities.

Then the pandemic creeped in while I was sitting at what was El Castillo drinking a glass of red and I knew it was going to change the way people worked and the way people travel.

We picked this specific property because it is shaded by the mango grove- a HUGE deal when you’re walking around. It also was a massive property that was just at the end of the main street with very little neighbors. Folks that we’ve had for maintenance on the property are shocked at how much property we own in Surfside. At almost an acre in the middle of town, this is a really special place.
